Volunteer researchers are available in the Family History Room, Local Studies Section of Wollongong City Library on Wednesdays and Fridays from 9.30 am to 12.00 pm, and the 3rd Saturday of each month from 9.30 am to 12.00 pm.

Research Assistance


Over the years, the Illawarra Family History Group has acquired a valuable collection of resource material.  This is held in the Family History Room, Local Studies section of Wollongong City Library.

 

The Family History Room

Most of the collection is open access and available during normal library hours; however, some items are available only to members.

Members can access these items by presenting their current IFHG membership card to the duty librarian, who will provide the keys to the locked cupboards and filing cabinets.

 

Research Assistance

Library Research

Research volunteers are present at the Wollongong City Library on Wednesday and Friday mornings from 9.30 am to 12.00 pm.  This service is FREE.

Our Ryerson Index volunteer is available in the library by appointment on Wednesday

Our DNA volunteer is available in the library by appointment on Wednesday.

Research outside of Library hours

If you cannot attend the library, the IFHG research team can conduct research for you via email.  This service carries a fee.  Please contact the IFHG Secretary for further details.   secretary@ifhg.org.au

 

Requesting research assistance

·       Provide as much information as possible

·       Names and birth, marriage and death dates (if known)

·       Date of arrival (if known)

·       Locations where they may have resided.

 

Research Fee Payment

 

Increase in Research Fees – from Jan 1 2026

 

Non-Members: -

·       Initial Fee – $35 for 1st hour or part thereof

·       Additional research - $25 / hour

v A Deposit of $35.00 is required prior to any research being conducted

 

For Members:-

·       2 hours free research per year

·       Additional research - $20 / hour

·       Quick “Lookup” Service – free

v A deposit of $20 is required before any paid research is conducted

Membership

 New members' packs
 
New members' packs will be available for pick up in the Family History Room, Local Studies Section of Wollongong City Library, on Wednesdays or Fridays from 9.30 am to 12.00 pm or at the monthly General Meetings.

  • "IFHG Newsletter" - Journal 4 times a year - add your stories and requests.
  • Members Interests added to our Website - reach more people world wide.
  • No fees for personal research AND reduced fees for research when you cannot get to the library.
  • Research Library - in the Reference Section of the Wollongong Library, open to the public during library hours, however only Members are allowed access to the locked files and cupboards that are not open to the public.

Membership Fees 
 
Membership fees are due on the 1st of January each year. 

Our annual fees are:


Single = $36.00

Single Pension = $30.00

Family = $41.00 (1 form for each member)

Family Pension = $36.00

Please note: Membership Fee includes a ‘once only’ $1.00 entrance fee.

Payment can be by EFT (preferred), or cash.

Your Membership form will be presented to the next Committee Meeting for approval.
