President and Committee Page - September 2014

It's been a busy period over the last few months, with Illawarra FHG organising the NSW & ACT FHS annual conference - led by Judy Bull and her team - and what a great conference ! Here's some great feedback from Bankstown.

And not to mention so many significant anniversaries in the last month or so  :

  • Centenary of the start of WW1 - August 4 2014
  • Centenary of Australia's first off-shore AN & MEF action in WW1 in New Guinea - September 2014
  • 75th anniversary of the start of WW2 - September 1 2014
Terry Bugg and I attended the launch of  Wollongong Uni's UOW reflects on WW1 (seen below with reps from Woonona Bulli RSL Sub Branch) - where I also met my distant cousin Brian Harris from Moruya who runs their local historical society's web page, blog,  Facebook page & Pinterest site.

August was also National Family History Month around Australia and there were some interesting activities - perhaps something for the Illawarra Family History Group to consider for 2015
 - along with Australian History Week and the NSW National Trust Heritage Festival  April to May 2015 ?

In August 2014, I also had the opportunity to spend time with Lance Brown, a fit and talkative 104 year old, who lives in the northern Illawarra. Lance could recall the day his uncle came home from WW1 in 1918, and sitting on the running board of the car, transporting his uncle from Bulli Railway Station to the family home!

And have you seen AFFHO's latest newsletter ? - Read it here - with advance notice of their March 2015 Congress in Canberra (certainly not cheap - but early bird registrations close October 31 2014).

I hadn't looked at the Illawarra Historical Society's web page for quite a while - it certainly looks different to the old site !

Hope to see you all at the next IFHG Monthly meeting to be held on September 17 at 6pm for 6.30pm at the Family History Section of the Wollongong City Library, Burelli St Wollongong.
